BP, the global energy titan, has enlisted Enable Renewables for an ongoing nationwide project. This involves the deployment of electric vehicle (EV) charging points at existing BP petrol station forecourts and select locations across the United Kingdom. The project encompasses comprehensive site preparation, civil work, and ongoing electrical installations.

This complex endeavour places paramount importance on keeping BP’s petrol stations fully operational and accessible to the public throughout the construction phase. The integration of new charging infrastructure alongside existing facilities is a meticulous process, ensuring seamless access for both electric and non-electric vehicles. It also prioritises safety, providing secure pathways for drivers and passengers from their vehicles to the station’s payment point and convenience store.

The broader Enable Group plays a pivotal role in this initiative. Enable Infrastructure, as a NICEIC-approved company, certifies the works before connecting them to the DNO (distribution network operator) network. Enable Design leads the charge in surveying and design, while Enable Resourcing contributes essential labour.

Our stakeholder management programme is instrumental in seamlessly integrating Enable’s processes into the construction works. It involves extensive pre-planning, collaborative workshops, and ongoing weekly stakeholder engagement meetings.

Enable Renewables proudly delivers innovation in this rapidly expanding sector, harnessing the collective expertise and experience of Enable Group teams.

  • The widespread locations of the sites around the UK
  • Frequent lack of survey data and other necessary information for long-existing forecourts
  • Continuity issues when we had to take on designs completed by outside designers
  • Maintaining access and egress to the forecourts and payment point/stores, often for 24 hours a day
  • The specialist training required for work at petrol stations
  • Limited international availability of certain required materials.

  • With our robust supply chain, we are able to commit the necessary resources to overcome the geographical challenge.
  • We are undertaking our own surveys and using GPR (ground penetrating radar) and GI to mitigate the site data deficiencies.
  • Design consistency and continuity were ensured through a combination of workshops, site visits and design reviews.
  • Pre-planning and extensive liaison with the client and with the petrol station store managers helped us maintain access.
  • We carried out the necessary access and electrical training across both management and our UK-wide supply chain.
  • Finally, we are working collaboratively with other contractors regarding the procurement of materials to ensure smooth supply to our site locations.

  • Construct foundations and install LV pillars to accommodate the supply and metering
  • Provide power to new chargers on BP forecourts and select locations
  • Install and commission chargers
  • Provide new lighting and safety bollards to minimise the risk of collision for members of the public
  • Construct new parking adjacent to the chargers, with suitable surfacing/lining & signage
  • Install suitable earthing
  • Install cabling and ducting back to the forecourt convenience store.
