EV Charging Design and Build for BP Petrol Station Forecourts

Black & Veatch

Enable Infrastructure was contracted by Black & Veatch, the principal contractor, to carry out the installation of electric vehicle charging points at BP petrol station forecourts throughout the United Kingdom. Enable Infrastructure successfully secured contracts for both the detailed design and construction phases of the project, as outlined in Black & Veatch’s invitation to tender. The construction work encompassed site preparation, civil engineering, and electrical installations. Enable was able to deliver this project successfully with the petrol stations remaining fully operational and open to the general public during the works as per clients’ requirements.

Our Enable Power Systems teams played a crucial role in this project. Being a NICEIC-approved company, Enable Infrastructure  was able to certify the works before connecting to the DNO network. Enables Design team also completed 60 detailed designs after a series of reviews and workshops with the client to agree on the design format.

In addition, our stakeholder management program has involved extensive pre-planning, workshops, and weekly stakeholder engagement meetings to seamlessly integrate Enable processes into the construction works. We have successfully completed 35 installations in the first six months of the project.

Furthermore, we have gone above and beyond to add value for the client by assisting other parties involved in the program. We have deployed our own resources to undertake other contractors’ scope when they faced supply chain issues in this niche market. Enable Infrastructure is delivering an innovative project in this rapidly growing sector by leveraging the expertise and experience of our various teams across the Enable Group. Enable successfully complete this project to budget and time with full completion in March 2023.

  • The widespread locations of the sites around the UK
  • Frequent lack of survey data and other necessary information for long-existing forecourts
  • Continuity issues when working to designs completed by outside designers
  • Maintaining access and egress to the forecourts and payment point/stores, often for 24 hours a day
  • The specialist training required for work at petrol stations
  • Limited international availability of certain required materials.

On account of our robust supply chain, Enable successfully overcame the geographical challenge by allocating the required resources where needed. To address any data deficiencies, we conducted our own surveys using ground penetrating radar (GPR) and geographic information (GI). We maintained design consistency and continuity through a combination of workshops, site visits, and design reviews. Effective pre-planning and extensive communication with the client and petrol station store managers enabled us to ensure uninterrupted access. We also provided access and electrical training to both our management and the entire UK-wide supply chain. Lastly, we collaborated with other contractors to procure materials, ensuring that we all achieved our shared objective.

  • Construct new parking adjacent to the chargers, with suitable surfacing/lining & signage
  • Install suitable earthing
  • Construct foundations and install LV pillars to accommodate the supply and metering
  • Provide new lighting and safety bollards to minimise the risk of collision for members of the public
  • Install and commission chargers
  • Provide power to new chargers on BP forecourts
  • Install cabling and ducting back to the forecourt convenience store.
